Wait… did you say blue moon? Ohh, I thought you were talking about Shrooma!
But, yes, you’re right there is a blue moon coming up! August 22nd of course! And it’s a special one, a seasonal blue moon, coming into Aquarius. But what is a blue moon? Well, here’s a hint, it’s not a result of taking too many shrooms…
What is a Blue Moon?
You’ll have heard the phrase ‘once in a blue moon.’ It means something rare that doesn’t occur often. Special. Worth mentioning. But what’s it based on? And what actually is a ‘blue moon?’
So, there are two types of ‘blue moon’. One is called a ‘monthly’ blue moon. This is when there are two full moons within a calendar month. A moon cycle is roughly 29.5 days long — however the amount of days in each month vary slightly, meaning that eventually the cycle gets wonky enough that we get two full moons in one month. That is one type of Blue Moon. It is actually a newer definition based on a misinterpretation of the older concept of a blue moon which is as follows…
The second blue moon is the kind that is coming up this August. A ‘seasonal’ blue moon. This is when when there are four full moons in a season. That’s the time between equinoxes and solstices, governed by harvests and longest and shortest days. These types of blue moons are usually seen as a bit more magical, spiritual etc. as they are connected to earthly changes rather than the calendar dates that us humans have slapped on Mother Earth.
A quick disclaimer however: blue moons aren’t actually blue. Well, they can be, but that’s a whole other thing altogether, even rarer and caused by the reflection of light in particles in the air. So while a blue moon can appear blue, it’s not actually blue, and a blue-coloured moon is even rarer than a blue moon itself! Confusing huh? Better to just let that extra full moon just wash over you, no questions asked…
What August’s Blue Moon Means…
August 22nd’s blue moon is coming at a tumultuous time for the world. Still in the grips of the pandemic — with the climate crisis raging — sometimes it helps to look towards the skies for some guidance. So let’s delve into what the spiritual and astrological implications are for the extra lunar outing this summer.
Leaving Leo Behind:
This extra moon is appearing at the end of Leo season. As any Leo will surely tell you (without having been asked) — they are pure extroverts, darling! The month of August with the Leo sign is usually full of fun, extravagance, and charm. Meow. This blue moon at the end of Leo will bring this sparkliness to a climax — why not hang out with some new people, go on a date, or simply dance the night away with old friends?
The Age of Aquarius:
Both of the full moons this August fall in Aquarius. Aquarius energy is strong, creative, dynamic and exciting. It promotes innovation, and identifying the changes that need to be made — and then making them. Of course, there are big changes that need to be made globally (anyone see that climate report?) but a full moon in Aquarius is also a great time to examine the changes you need to make personally in your life.
Second Chances:
Typically, blue moons are also associated with second chances. It makes sense right? The moon gets two chances this month, why not you too? Is there a friend you want to reach out to, after a disagreement? Something you want to try again? A new job application or hobby? Now is the time! Reignite past passions, or try things again that went a bit wonky the first time around (or the second, or the third!)
Let Love In:
Two full moons in a month? Well it takes two to tango! Why not connect with your partner or loved one on August 22nd? Go for a meal, take a class, watch a movie… anything to celebrate your ‘two-ness’. You could do worse than simply lying back and moon-gazing together…
The Sturgeon Moon:
According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac The full moon that occurs around the 21st/22nd of August is known as a Sturgeon Moon. What is a sturgeon? Well, it’s a big old prehistoric-looking fish if you must ask! Native American tradition names this moon ‘Sturgeon Moon’ as sturgeons would be easiest to catch in the Great Lakes during this month — the added light from the big cheese in the sky most certainly helped! Evidence of sturgeons dates back up to 200 million years ago — they are a hardy fish for sure. Why not harness their power and realise how strong and resilient you can be?
How To Celebrate The Blue Moon
With Shrooms:
Of course our top suggestion on how to celebrate the coming blue moon is to take some magic mushrooms or truffles! Think about it… shrooms make everything a more spiritual and magical experience — why not double down? A full moon, and most especially a blue moon, are about manifesting change and giving you that extra power to make it happen — rather like a shroom trip can be! Setting goals and intentions before a trip can help to make you see what is really important, and where you want to go next in your life. Tripping during a blue moon can only make your intentions even more turbo-charged.
Find a place where you will have a good view of the moon. Write down or say aloud your intentions for the coming season. Take your magic truffles and get dreaming! They say that intentions you make during a blue moon are so strong they can continue until the next blue moon! Trippy!
Alternately, if you don’t have any pressing changes or revelations, just take some shrooms and be at one with Mother Moon, space cadet!
With Crystals:
Let the light from the blue moon illuminate your crystals! You can do a similar ritual to the one above — intention setting, speaking aloud etc. or make up your own! Make sure you let the moonlight dance upon these crystals specifically:
Moonstone — use moonstone to connect yourself to the moon, the divine femnine, your third eye and the heart chakra!
Rose Quartz — remember we mentioned a strong connection between love and full moons? Well you can intensify this with the pink love stone – rose quartz. Note! This doesn’t have to be the love of another, you can also intensify self love, care and appreciation.
Clear Quartz — this stone is known as the ‘master healer’. An all round good vibes crystal that amplifies energy and purifies a space. Use it to harness the moon’s power.
Tiger’s Eye — gives energy and spurs on motivation. Helps with decision making — great for all the blue moon changes you are making!
Obsidian — the protection stone. Its opaque surface blocks out negativity and doubts.
By Making a Moon Den:
Why not welcome the blue moon by decorating a lil’ bit? Find a good view and enhance the space by adorning it with blue items to encourage the blue moon. Blue lighting, candles, crystals, blankets, food, anything you like really! You could listen to some moon themed music — once you start searching for songs with moon in the title you’ll find the list is endless. You could try:
Blue Moon — Elvis Presley/ Billie Holiday/ Frank Sinatra etc.
Dark Side of The Moon — (the whole album) Pink Floyd
Bad Moon Rising — Creedence Clearwater Revival
Dancing In The Moonlight — Toploader
Moonbeam Levels — Prince
Harvest Moon — Neil Young
The list goes on!
Take A Moonlit Walk
Sometimes the simplest ideas are just as good. Take a stroll and enjoy the blue moon from all angles. Perfect!
(of course all of the above activities you can also combine with magic truffles too ? )
There you have it! The blue moon, a rare and beautiful occurrence, only happening — well — once in a blue moon! So enjoy!
