The report was significant because it marked the first time that the Pentagon officially acknowledged the existence of UAP and publicly released information about its investigation into the phenomena. Basically, they weren’t saying aliens exist exactly, but they were admitting there are some things flying about in the sky, and they haven’t the foggiest what they are! UFO-heads, sorry UAP-heads, were certainly rubbing their hands together with glee — they want to believe, y’know, and this was certainly the closest a governmental body has been to admitting that there are some things even they can’t explain.
However, the past few years have been so (pick one) crazy/dramatic/eventful/messy, this report didn’t make quite the same splash it might have done if the world was a bit more, let’s say, calm. So, it explains why it’s only now that people are really studying the thing.
Sightings That Cannot Be Explained
What the report did state was that there were 144 incidents of UAP reported between 2004 and 2021, with the majority of the incidents being reported in 2019 and 2020. The report also revealed that most of the UAP sightings could not be easily explained or linked to any known aircraft or technology.
Mushroom-Shaped UAPs Included in Report
It was a long, and rather dry report, for a subject so potentially juicy, however there were some morsels we were able to glean that really piqued our interest. In amongst the small print and descriptions of the classic disc-like or ovular UAP forms, there were some surprises. At least 3 of the UAPs sighted were described as mushroom-shaped or mushroom-like in form. Two were spotted above oceans and one was spotted above the desert by the American military.
This tid-bit set us on a path looking for any other mushroom-shaped UAP phenomena. And it turns out, 2021’s report was not a unicorn — there are more!
Sightings of Mushroom-shaped UAPs Have Occurred For Centuries
Sure they’re not as common as those chrome-lozenges or floating cubes that dominate UAP reports, but sightings of mushroom-shaped UAPs have occurred for centuries! Although they differ in location and time across the world, there are always similarities. Even though airborne phenomena have been described differently throughout the centuries, humans have always known mushrooms, so regardless of era, the comparison remains the same — there’s nothing more mushroom-shaped than a mushroom, whether it’s 1321 or 2021!
Here are some choice unexplained fungi phenomena sightings:
Naples, 1297
In 1297 in Naples, Italy some Benedictine monks were said to have seen a mushroom-shaped object in the sky during a dusk walk in the grounds of their monastery. Immortalized in the village ledger is their report;
“In the dusk light we came upon a great shape in the sky, and though vast it could be recognized as the lowly mushroom, one of God’s humblest creatures.”
Isle of Wight, 1547
The Isle of Wight, situated just off the south coast of England, was host to a dramatic sighting in 1547. A group of women were harvesting apples early one morning when a mushroom-shaped object came at them from the sky. Reported in the Isle of Wight Almanac 1546-1549;
“Mary Tweed of Tattershill Lane, and others, were startled from their toil when the bright autumn sky became dark, and on looking at the sky a large shape, similar to that of a toadstool could be seen. The apples of the orchard trees at once were felled from their branches, and the women fled in fear. Later they returned to retrieve the apples, and found much of their work already done.”
Paris, 1789
Not long before the French Revolution of 1789, which would continue for 10 years, a mysterious mushroom-shaped object was spotted above simmering Paris. Le Courrier reported the sighting at the time;
“Moving slowly from side to side, with no visible method of propulsion, a great shape was seen above the troubled skies of Paris. Some proclaimed it to be a portent of coming chaos, and it was described by many who saw it as a ‘floating champignon’.”
Colombia, 1934
The Volcano Nevado del Huila in Colombia is a place that can claim an uncanny amount of UAP sightings, especially in recent years. In 1934 however, that a mushroom-shaped object was seen in the night sky. Reports at the time said;
“It was unlike any aircraft that had been seen before, even those that are used by the military. It hovered above the volcano’s mouth and seemed to trace its edge. The most remarkable things was that its shape was reminiscent of a mushroom, confounding all who saw it.”
Japan, 2023
The most recent of reports comes from a TikTok user in Japan just this February. Himari, a 17 year-old-girl living in Saitama, shared a video in which she describes seeing a mushroom-shaped brightly lit object moving low in the sky. Initially thinking it was an advertising stunt, she filmed it until it suddenly disappeared without a trace. Many others have also reported seeing this strange object.
Terence McKenna and Mushrooms From Outer Space
It’s not the first time mushrooms and extra-terrestrial ideas have collided. Psychedelic icon Terence McKenna had a special theory of his own. Although one of his most controversial, it is also one of his most famous. Specifically McKenna suggested that mushrooms, particularly psilocybin mushrooms, were not of this world and had extraterrestrial origins.
McKenna believed that the psilocybin in magic mushrooms has the ability to elevate human consciousness and open doors to alternate realities. He theorized that these mushrooms were brought to Earth by an alien race that wanted to accelerate human evolution and help us become more connected to the universe.
According to McKenna, psilocybin mushrooms were part of a larger plan by these extraterrestrial beings to guide human consciousness towards a higher state of awareness and understanding. He believed that these mushrooms held the key to unlocking the mysteries of the universe and that their use could lead to a radical shift in human consciousness and perception.
While McKenna’s theory about mushrooms being aliens is not widely accepted by the scientific community, it has gained a significant following among those interested in the spiritual and metaphysical aspects of psychedelics.
Unidentified Flying Mushrooms?
Could there be a connection to this theory and the mushroom-shaped UAP sightings that have peppered the centuries?
It’s surely a wacky idea… but certainly an interesting one. And with the even the U.S. government unable to explain the existence of these mushroom-shaped objects, the only question that remains is:
Do you want to believe?
Pppssst! Happy April Fools! Did we get ya?
