Recent headlines have shown, however, that the benefits of psychedelics go far beyond leisure alone. Like, wayyy beyond. For starters, pairing shrooms with therapy has helped many patients recover from serious psychological conditions, such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, and substance abuse. And while hippies have been grooving along to psychedelics for decades now… What about those that lean a bit further towards the establishment? Could even the tradition-lovin’ GOP have finally opened their eyes to the sheer therapeutic goodness of magic mushrooms?
Seems like it!
Psilocybin to Help Treat Alcoholism
In California state, former Republican congresswoman Mimi Walters talks about how psilocybin helped a close family friend to recover from alcohol abuse disorder. Is it time for the right-wing U.S. government to give shrooms a chance? Walters reveals in an interview with Spectrum News:
“Somebody who’s very close to our family was an alcoholic at the age of 15 years old, and he tried everything he could in order to overcome this disease and he wasn’t successful.”
The person sought out solutions that didn’t work. And just as the situation seemed to get worse, they were invited to join a psilocybin study at New York University that aimed to cure alcoholism — for good. Did it work?
“He went through as one of the participants, actually got the psilocybin treatment. And after the first time he got the treatment, he lost all cravings for drinking.
“This happened about six years ago, and he has not had a craving since.”
California Dreams on Hold (For Now)
In order to convince fellow Republicans who are known for their staunch love of family, Walters knew she had to draw from personal experience. Real-world stories can do a lot to support a bill that allows the possession, cultivation, use and “social sharing” of a wide range of psychedelics — such as psilocybin from magic mushrooms and magic truffles, to ibogaine, DMT, mescaline, LSD, ketamine, and MDMA.
Sadly, re-voting on SB 519 has been stalled by California lawmakers until 2022. The bill has failed to pass two times now, but not to worry. Surf’s still up! It won more votes recently compared to its first reading. Odds are definitely good that it’ll pass next year. Sen. Scott Weiner of San Francisco, who sponsored SB 519, told West Coast psychonauts in a forum not to lose hope just yet:
“In the big picture, we need to end the war on drugs — for all drugs — and we should not be criminalizing possession and use of drugs. Drugs are a health issue, drugs are many things, they’re not a criminal issue.”
Sen. Weiner also said that the U.S. needs to stop packing their prisons “full of people who are using drugs”, who may actually be suffering from addiction and need medical help.
“We need to take a health focus — and I believe that we will get to the point in California where we achieve full drug decriminalization just like Oregon did.”
A Cure for Alcohol Addiction
Substance abuse is no joke. People who struggle with alcohol or hard drugs seek out ways to curb their addiction. Yet they rarely find a solution that works, plain and simple. Group therapy such as Alcoholics Anonymous can give a wonderful sense of community. It also requires a lot of self-control and the ability to say no to alcohol, kind of forever. Sure, talking with a therapist alone can stomp out the cause but not the urge or craving to drink (at least not for a few years).
Enter magic mushrooms and magic truffles, which may be able to solve the problem sooner than we thought…
How exactly does psilocybin work on a patient’s brain for it to finally lose interest in alcohol? And is it possible to be cured of alcohol addiction in as early as five weeks?
A recent study led by Dr. Michael Bogenschutz of the Center for Psychiatric Research, University of New Mexico, showed that patients who took psilocybin along with Motivational Enhancement Therapy greatly reduced their drinking habits after five weeks.
“Participants exhibited significant improvement in drinking, with large pre–post effect sizes, as well as significant changes in psychological measures…change in drinking was correlated with the mystical quality of the experience.”
Little to No Cravings at All
Taking hallucinogenic substances, such as psilocybin from magic mushrooms and truffles, can wake up certain parts in the brain known as 5HT2A receptors. These guys are responsible for “opening the doors of perception” during a psychedelic experience.
But a side effect of 5HT2A activity is a rise in two other things: brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF). And the more you have of these two factors, the less likely you are to consume alcohol.
In short, take the right amount of psilocybin and you’ll experience little to no alcohol cravings at all!
“These findings are relevant because levels of BDNF and GDNF are inversely related to alcohol consumption.”
Psilocybin, when taken with talk therapy, can *literally* rewire your brain to help treat severe conditions such as addiction, depression, and PTSD. And it’s one of the reasons why U.S. scientists, along with state lawmakers, are all working together. Pushing to decriminalise trippy compounds so that these can be used for life-saving medicine!
Rewire Your Brain With Psilocybin
Former Republican Rep. Mimi Walters is proof that the psychedelic renaissance ain’t backing down anytime soon. No, sir! The times are a-changin’ in America for good. Even the cautious can’t deny that magic mushrooms and magic truffles have a whole lot more to offer than fancy colours, out-of-body experiences, and leisurely trips to outer space at Burning Man. (“Those darn hippies with long hair! Who knew they were onto something?”) Whatever your politics, It doesn’t really matter, does it? What does matter is that the therapeutic benefits of magic mushrooms and magic truffles are simply far too great to ignore much longer. And that’s a scientific fact.
